The libero is the charge of the volleyball team. He has just the right to receive and defend the ball. He has some different rules other than other team players, that’s why he is wearing different jersey colors.
What does libero do?
A libero plays a role as a defensive in a game. When the alternative team is attacking, it is his responsibility to defend the ball. He has no permission to attack. His role is very useful. I think he is doing the best job in the game because it handles the overall activity of a ball. The Libero player also has a major responsibility, if any of his teammates required any problem on receiving the ball, the libero has to fix this problem.
Ruben Acosta is the President of FIVE. In 1998, he introduced this new libero position. He thought that making a libero player make a volleyball game more easy and attractive, especially for men’s game. The very first time the liberos appeared in Japan was in 1998.
I think he was definitely right because libero players make the game easy and more attractive and interesting for players.
Can libero serve?
No, a libero can’t serve. As I say before. A libero play as a defensive player. He just receives and defends the ball and protects his team from losing a point. But, he has no permission to make points.
But, in some leagues, rules are different are libero players have permission to serve in the leagues. We can say only a 97% chance that a libero player can player internationally and nationally.
Can libero attack?
No, the libero can’t attack. They just defend their team by stopping the ball of the other teams from the target point but not to have thrown it properly to the target point. If the need requires and a libero has to throw the ball, then he or she will be thrown the ball and the ball must be up from the net.
Why does libero wear different jersey colors from their teammates?
This is the most common question which comes to every libero player that why do they wear different jersey colors from their teammates? For sure, they don’t want to look different or want to be worn differently or look like a captain.
Irene Meyer, is one of the most common and experienced coaches in Europe. He explained that why libero players are looking different from other team players. This identification makes recognition easy because everyone knows that these different jersey holders can’t block, serve or make a point. Different jerseys can gain more attraction from everyone because of their different appearances.
